The relationship was not as I planned it, so I decided to talk to Mensa on what to do.
As usual Meshac, your face is not cheerful. What is it again? Mensa welcomed.
Mensa, I am not a bit happy.
Can you imagine Abena is bluffing me as if I am a nobody? Abena is treating me like some piece of trash. I explained.
The fault is from you Meshac, you shouldn’t have played hard to get in the initial stage. Now you see, instead of loving you, she is rather maltreating you.
Anyway, what do you suggest I do? He asked.
I have fallen in love with her now, and I want you to please let her know. I responded.
No Mesh, this is your mess and you must clean it up.
Continue loving her and pleading with her at the same time to give you a second loving chance. I believe she will listen to you. Mensa explained.
What even pains me most is that, she hardly gives me money to feed. I added.
Mesh, just do as I’ve told you, and I believe things will fall in place. He advised.
Days passed and things were still the same.
I began my kayayo job in the market.
One hot afternoon whiles carrying my working pan in my head, looking for load to carry, I met Abena’s mother.
I tried to dodge, but she called me.
Young man, come and carry my items for me. She said.
I shamefully walked to where she was seated and began loading my pan with her items.
Just then, her friend passed a comment.
How can a young handsome man like you engage in this kind of job?
Abena’s mother bent down to take a closer look at my face.
Indeed he is handsome and masculine.
Look at his colour, his nose, his eyeballs and his fleshy body. She complimented.
Ah, wait a minute, it seems I know you.
Are you not my daughter’s friend? She asked.
Yes mum, I am Abena’s friend. I responded shyly.
No! You don’t deserve this job, not at all. I will give you work to do. The woman assured.
I thank her so much and carried her items.
Young man, go and come for my goods too. I will be waiting for you. Her friend said.
I quickly followed Abena’s mother to the house and offloaded her items.
Mum, please where is Abena? I asked.
Forget Abena and focus on your job. Abena is a lazy girl who hardly stay in the house. She only comes home when she is hungry. The woman responded.
Now listen, I have a job for you that will pay you a handsome amount of money. Go and help my friend with her goods and come and let’s talk about it. She added.
I hurriedly went to the market to pick her friend’s goods.
You kept me waiting. Anyway, carry them and let’s go. She said.
I carried the items and followed her to the house.
She showed me to the store room and I offloaded the items there.
Mum, I have never seen such a beautiful house in this village. I complimented.
That is because you’ve never walked to this area before.
I am actually the only rich person in this village, aside my friend Mrs Asum. I mean Abena’s mother. She responded.
That’s nice to hear. God has really blessed you. I responded.
I can see you are tired. I hate to see handsome men suffering.
Anyway, come inside and let me serve you some food. The woman offered.
Wow, this woman is a saviour. How did she know I am hungry? I thought happily as I followed her into the room.
She served me rice with kontomire stew and I began eating like a mad person.
Seconds later, I was done, and asked permission to go back to the market.
Thanks so much for the food mum, I much appreciate. I must get going now. I said.
Not now dear, the sun is so much scorching, and you must not burn your beautiful colour for any kayayo job. She stated.
That is the only way I can make money that will feed me through out the week. I responded reluctantly.
I understand you, but I promise to pay you 100cedis. Will that be enough for you? She asked.
What! I have never seen such an amount in my life before.
What for? I mean why would pay me such an amount? I asked in shock.
You know what, my husband and children are out of this country, and I am alone in this village.
I always need nice people like you to be with me. She explained.
Just being with you for 100 cedis? I am ready mum. I responded happily.
That’s my boy! Now get into the bathroom and wash off your dirt, whiles I get into the kitchen to prepare banku and okro soup for us to enjoy as supper. She responded happily too.
When you finish bathing, open the wardrobe, you will find nice shirts and shorts belonging to my son. Wear anyone that fits you. She added and walked into her kitchen.
I couldn’t just believe my ears.
Sweetness fall on me! Riches fall on me! Luck fall on me. I sang happily in my head as I entered the bathroom.
